Winter time. The snow crunching underneath your feet, hot chocolate and warm apple cider, and of course, Christmas and the holiday season. Some cities epitomize the whole traditional winter experience. Here are some of our favourite warm and cheery winter cities for travellers to have some frosty fun....

Niagara Falls

Why Niagara Falls? It's pretty in the winter, way less crowded and much less of a "tourist trap" feel. The Falls are still spectacular. We would encourage anyone who has never been to Niagara Falls to consider visiting it on a winter's weekend. Visitors can also enjoy the Niagara Winter Festival of Lights, Canada's largest lights festival, which runs from November to the end of January.

Quebec City

Quebec City is indeed rustic and romantic, and definitely a city that comes alive in the cold months. One of the most alluring and historically interesting cities in North America, Quebec City is home to the world famous Carnaval de Quebec, the Winter Carnaval. Everything from dog sled races to ice carving to the world's best tourtieres (Quebecois meat pies-delicious) can be experienced at Carnaval.

Every November to February since 1832, Cologne, Germany celebrates winter with the Fastelovend, the Winter Carnival. It all culminates in cold February, when this German "Mardi-Gras", during which revellers dress up in costume. A celebration of fun foolishness, this massive parade is broadcast on Germany TV each year.

Winter is of course the holiday season in much of the world.  There is no better place on the planet to celebrate Christmas and the holiday season  than the hundreds of thousands of lights and delicious food at the Tivoli Christmas Market, which attracts over 1 million visitors a year.

Strap on a pair of rented ice skates and glide down the Rideau Canal. A 7 kilometre long ice skating rink, with cozy fires, hot chocolate, warm snacks and lots of entertainment along the way.  If you are visiting Ottawa, the best way to experience skating the Rideau is during the week, as the Canal can get pretty crowded on weekends.

Don't want to snowshoe or iceskate? No problem. Some people just don't like the cold and snow. Totally understandable. The average January temperature in Phoenix, Arizona is a dry and comfortable 23 degrees celsius. Phoenix is the perfect destination to enjoy the winter months exploring the nearby Sonora Desert, golfing, being pampered in a spa or shopping.
